Owner
Fiona Sole is a qualified makeup artist who has been working in the film, TV and stage industries for 18 years. She has worked with and studied under Kym Sainsbury, Peter King and Kylie Clarke, all master wig makers.
Fiona was first taught wig knotting (the process of attaching individual hairs to form a wig) at Weta Workshop during pre-production for The Lord of the Rings in 1999 by Kim Sainsbury, an amazing Australian special effects artist. In the intervening years Fiona has worked in locations all over Australasia.
Peter King, an Oscar winning makeup and hair designer, was instrumental in furthering Fiona's skills in wig making whilst she worked under him in the makeup department for The Hobbit. It was during production for this series of features that Fiona realised the need for more wig makers in the New Zealand market.
To hone her skills in both wig making and design, Fiona sought out world renowned wig maker Kylie Clarke in Sydney, Australia. Working there solidified her passion and her abilities in wig making, and Kylie set a great example of how to run a business and how to build top quality wigs for film and the general public.
Since returning home Fiona has hit the ground running; besides starting Fiona Sole Wig Making, she has spent time running the hair department at Weta Workshop, and producing work for the Gallipoli exhibition at Te Papa, for Peter Jackson's exhibition at Massy Memorial. She has also made wigs, hair pieces and body hair for the innovative New Zealand/Australian coproduction of Cleverman.
Fiona is dedicated to and passionate about creating amazing, interesting, beautiful and well made wigs and hair pieces for any character, occasion or production.
